The athletes are anxious to test their strength at international gymnastics competitions, but their opportunities to do so have continued to diminish in recent years.
""We don't have enough confidence,"" mused Ilya Kornev from Kazakhstan. ""We sit at home all the time. We don't get out anywhere. We come here and immediately everything starts to collapse. We aren't able to deal with our nerves.""
Kazakhstan finished the qualification round at the 2014 Nanning World Championships with 313.899 points. This result was an underachievement for the gymnasts who had hoped to finish among the top 24 teams. The reason, the veteran gymnast said, was that they lacked experience in major competitions before coming to Nanning.
This year Nike Shox Damen Schweiz , the team leaders, Kornev and Stepan Gorbachev, participated in just a few international competitions. They took part in a stage of the World Cup, competed in the Asian Games where they got ninth and 11th place respectively in the individual all-around and afterwards were immediately directed to the World Championships.

""There is not enough difficulty and even with combinations that are not so difficult, we make mistakes,"" Gorbachev said about the Kazakhs' low-scoring routines.

Things seemed to change for the better when a new gymnastics center with standardised equipment was built in Almaty in 2012. However, local gymnasts are not able to train there.

Kazakhstan has a new crop of talent coming up, but the 31-year-old Gorbachev is doubtful if they can improve on his team's results unless they get the chance to go to more competitions and training meets.
